Gramma's sugar cookies

When I was little, Gramma always kept the cookies in a roasting pan just like this.

Today is my Gramma’s birthday. This is her first birthday in heaven as she unexpectedly passed away the end of March. Everyone that knew her loved her. She was so sweet! She was grateful for all her blessings and she was very blessed- living almost 98 years, healthy, and happily married to my Grampa for 74 years! They traveled the world and enjoyed time with family and friends. So many wonderful stories and memories.

One of the things our whole family looked forward to was Gramma’s sugar cookies. The recipe was actually from my Great Gramma, but Gramma made dozens and dozens for each family at Christmas time. My dad was there in early December one year and said it was quite a production! Gramma said to me once when I commented about how good they are that, “Really, they’re not the best. There are other better recipes out there.” Well, you can decide for yourself. This is a simple recipe, but I’m sure Gramma always added love.

Sift together:

3 cups flour

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 teaspoon baking soda

Cut into above mixture:  1 cup butter  (like you do when making pie crust)

In a separate bowl-

Beat well:  2 eggs

Mix in:     1 cup sugar

Add eggs and sugar to flour/butter mixture.

There are different ways to shape and bake them:

*Roll out and cut into shapes

*Drop into mounds on cookie sheet and press with bottom of glass smeared with butter and dipped into sugar

*Roll about 2 TBSP of batter into a ball, put onto cookie sheet and press out with heel of hand

Bake at 375 until light brown.

Half of our family likes them frosted with buttercream, the other half likes them plain; which do you prefer?
